How do I make an RDP connection to my VPS / Cloud Server without need for a Secure VPN connection?
Posted by J.T. Smith on 30 October 2012 11:21 AM

For best VPS / Cloud Server security, ViUX™ blocks the default RDP port of 3389. If you need to connect to a Windows VPS / Cloud Server on the ViUX network via RDP you will need to open a Support Ticket requesting access - stating your VPS ID #, VPS IP Address, and the IP Address(es) of the system(s) from which you are attempting to connect. We will thereby grant RDP access on the default port 3389 to your VPS / Cloud Server from the indicated IP Address(es).

ViUX also provides Secure VPN access that will allow you to make an RDP connection on port 3389 from any IP Address that has first made a successful VPN connection. This avoids the need for pre-approval of your specific IP Address (as detailed above); however it does require you to install and configure the FortiClient SSLVPN Client, as well as, make a successful VPN connection before attempting to connect via RDP on the default port 3389.

Or alternatively, you may opt to change the default RDP listing port for your specific VPS / Cloud Server from 3389 to an alternate port that we can then enable for general RDP access by any (anonymous) IP Address - with no need for either pre-approval of your IP Address(es) or a Secure VPN connection. This is the least secure of the three RDP connection options; however we also make this available for those that desire ease of access over security. For this option to work, you (or we on your behalf) must change the RDP listing port as detailed below...
